Philosophy of Clinical Practice

Clinical Practice and Interventional Radiology

Albany IR is proud of the patient-centered philosophy that we have established through the years. Historically, interventional radiologists have been "behind-the-scenes" physicians that helped other physicians by performing complex image-guided procedures on patients when called upon to do so. As the field of IR is changing, so is the care that is offered to our patients. Interventional radiologists are now offering longitudinal care to their patients, meaning that they remain engaged in the care of each individual patient from the time they meet before a procedure through the end of a period of follow-up.

Fortunately, this is nothing new to our practice. We have been engaging in this form of patient care for almost two decades and have made it the cornerstone of our practice. We are a hospital-based practice that is centered in our outpatient office located in Latham, NY. Many of our patients are first seen in our office before any procedures are performed. Our office is located at 711 Troy Schenectady Road, in Latham, New York and is part of ImageCare Medical Imaging and Community Care Physicians.

These office visits give our staff the opportunity to assess our patients before any procedures are performed to insure that everyone's goals are aligned and that the right procedure is being performed for the right reason. Importantly, this also gives our patients the chance to get to know all of the members of our team, including a physician, a nurse practitioner, and our nursing coordinator who all work together to make sure that each patient has a satisfying experience with our practice. Finally, it allows our patients to ask questions about their care in a relaxed environment before being seen in a hospital for their procedure. In our experience, patients have welcomed that opportunity because it helps reduce the stress associated with undergoing any procedure, especially one being performed in a large, busy hospital.

Our responsibility extends from this interaction before the procedure through the very end of this episode of your care. This certainly involves all of the care you receive on the day of your procedure. Our goal is to insure your comfort throughout your procedure and to make sure that the next step in the care you receive after the procedure is seamlessly arranged for you. Some of the procedures we perform do not require additional follow-up by our practice, but many do. In those circumstances, we will see you in follow-up in our office until we know that you have recovered and achieved the desired outcome from our procedure(s).

For patients that require an inpatient hospital stay, or for patients that are first encountered during an inpatient stay, our practice assumes all responsibility for the peri-procedural care delivered while in the hospital. This means that we will see you on a daily basis while you recover from the procedure through your discharge. If appropriate, we will then arrange follow-up within our outpatient office so we can continue to have a role in your care.
